Tanzania Country Overview. The official name is the United Republic of Tanzania. Called Tanzania for short. The former name was Tanganyika. In 1964 Tanganyika merged with Zanzibar forming the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Later, they renamed it the United Republic of Tanzania. Tanganyika became an independent republic on 9th December 1961.
